Welcome to all goblins, ghouls, and little monsters!  This month in our “Learn. Do. Grow!”  Blog, we’re ready to explore spooky season!  From weird science that would make Dr. Frankenstein proud to learning some of the hidden secrets of Halloween and celebrating the light and beauty of Diwali, we are ready to embrace all the mischief and fun the month has to offer.

 This Month We Celebrate…

Halloween

October 31st is Halloween! Here are some fun facts you may not have known about this popular holiday:

  • Irish immigrants brought Halloween to the U.S.
  • The Guinness World Record for lit jack-o-lanterns on display is 30,581.
  • Trick or Treating has existed since medieval times.
  • People originally carved turnips, not pumpkins.

STEAM Challenge

Make the perfect accessory to your Halloween costume in our Scientific Fake Blood Challenge!

You will need:

  • Three small cups or glasses (more if you want to test more recipes)
  • Flour
  • Water
  • Corn syrup
  • Chocolate syrup
  • Red and blue liquid food coloring
  • Cutting board or plate, preferably white or a light color.
  • Three small spoons, teaspoon size spoons work well.
  • Sink or bowl with water to rinse cups and the cutting board.
  • Towel to dry off the cutting board.
  • Optional: Other ingredients to consider are tomato ketchup, coffee grounds, maple or pancake syrup, cornstarch

Diwali

October 24th is Diwali! Also known as the festival of light, Diwali is a celebration of the Hindu New Year and the victory of light over darkness.  Festivities usually last up to five days, with customs ranging from visits to temple, cooking special foods, and, of course, lots of lights.  Click the link below from Kids World Travel Guide to learn some more facts about this beautiful holiday and have a celebration of your own!

Tip of the Month

Autumn is a season of transition.  Some are already missing the warmth of Summer, while others are eagerly awaiting the first snowfall.  Whichever type you are, this middle season can be the best of both!
