Introducing The TMCOpsUpdates Twitter
In Truckee they say, if you don’t like the weather, wait a half-hour. While it is funny to joke about, it is very much the truth here in our mountainous climate. In the last week alone we have seen afternoon thunderstorms impact pool operations and cancel events. Then a few days later we saw operational impacts due to Hurricane Hillary. As a club, we do our best to be forward-thinking and plan ahead for these weather events, but as mentioned above, the weather can change in an instant and it’s not always easy to know what is going to happen.
With those impacts and uncertainties in mind, it’s become clear that we, as an organization, can do a better job of keeping you, the membership, informed of operational impacts. If the pool closes due to lightning in the area, you probably want to know before you show up in your swimsuit. Same goes for last-minute changes to restaurant operations in the winter, etc. etc.
After much thought, our Leadership Team has settled on a solution that prioritizes the quick distribution of information, directly from the source. We’ve started a Twitter account specifically for operational updates and have armed Managers and Directors with the ability to post updates as they happen. Our goal is to provide you with notice of outages and estimated times of reopening prior to you ever feeling the impact of the closure.
Why Not Email?
Many of your fellow Members have asked for emailed operational updates, but since everyone’s club usage is different, we don’t feel this is a viable solution. There is no point in emailing someone in San Francisco that the pool is closed for 30 minutes due to lightning. It won’t impact them and they are not interested. Twitter, on the other hand, allows Members to choose individually how to receive updates.
There are exceptions to this rule, however, if we are canceling events or closing restaurants last minute, we’ll be sure to email everyone who has a reservation or RSVP.
Four Ways to Receive Updates
Not to editorialize on current events, but some things have changed with how Twitter operates in the last few months. With that in mind, we’ve provided detailed instructions below that explain four different ways to access updates.
1. TWITTER NOTIFICATIONS – Alerts Sent Directly To Your Phone
With this solution, as soon as we send an update, it will appear on your phone screen. This solution is best for frequent users of the club who want to know immediately of operational impacts.
Note: This solution is only an option for people who have a Twitter account.
Step 1: Download the Twitter App to your phone. Can’t find it? It was renamed “X” a few weeks ago. So search for that.
Step 2: Sign in to Twitter (X) or create a Twitter account
Step 3: Search for “TMCOpsUpdates”
Step 4: Tap “Follow”
Step 5: Press the button with a bell and a +
Step 6: Select “all posts”
2. FOLLOW “TMCOPSUPDATES” ON TWITTER – Information When You Seek It Out
With this solution, you can keep an eye on operational updates when you want to. Alerts will not come to your phone, but you can seek them out when you are interested and you can see them when you are on Twitter for other reasons.
Note: This solution is only an option for people who have a Twitter account.

3. VIEW UPDATES ON YOUR NITTER – No Sign-in Reqired
Nope, that is not a typo. You can view updates on Nitter. As part of Twitter’s recent changes, the site added a requirement that people be signed in to view Tweets. The nice folks at Nitter.net created a workaround allowing people without accounts to view content.
All you have to do to see updates is click this link: https://nitter.net/TMCOpsUpdates
4. VIEW UPDATES ON THE TMC MOBILE APP – No Sign-in Required
If you already have the TMC Mobile App, you are in luck! Just open the app and tap the “Operations Updates” tile and you’ll see alerts right away.
